{"id":710,"date":"2019-04-18T16:39:37","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T13:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.test4u.eu\/excelpedia\/?p=710"},"modified":"2019-04-18T17:09:45","modified_gmt":"2019-04-18T14:09:45","slug":"the-match-function","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.test4u.eu\/excelpedia\/the-match-function\/","title":{"rendered":"The MATCH Function"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <b>MATCH<\/b> function  searches for a specified item in a range of cells, and then returns the relative position of that item in the range . <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have prepared a<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.test4u.eu\/excelpedia\/how-to-use-the-match-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"tutorial on the MATCH (opens in a new tab)\">tutorial on the MATCH<\/a><\/strong> function to explain it in a bit more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\n\nThe syntax of the function is the following:\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>MATCH<\/strong>(<strong>lookup_value<\/strong>, <strong>lookup_array<\/strong>, [<strong>match_type<\/strong>]) <\/p><cite><strong>lookup_value<\/strong> : The value that you want to match in lookup_array.<br><span><b>lookup_array<\/b><\/span> : The range of cells being searched.<br><strong>match_type<\/strong>: Optional. The number -1, 0, or 1. \n<span style=\"margin-left:20px;text-align:left\"><ul><li>The default value is 1.  It finds the largest value that is less than or equal to lookup_value.<br><\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The value 0 finds the first value that is exactly equal to lookup_value.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The value -1 finds the smallest value that is greater than or equal to lookup_value.<\/li><\/ul><\/span><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MATCH return the position of the matched value and not the value itself<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MATCH is case insensitive when matching text values<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no match is found an error #N\/A is returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can use the wildcard characters, question mark (?) and asterisk (*), in criteria.
